About Atticus Market

Atticus Market blends a bakery, cafe, and artisan grocery under one light-filled roof.

Staffed for coffee and counter service, it’s known for fresh pastries, sturdy sandwiches on semolina rolls, and a market selection that reads like a thoughtful pantry edit.

Hashtag Pizza Fact's

The Controversial Hawaiian Pizza

Hawaiian pizza, topped with pineapple and ham, was invented in Ontario, Canada in 1962 by Greek-Canadian Sam Panopoulos. Contrary to its name, the pizza does not originate from Hawaii but was named after the brand of canned pineapple used. Its sweet and salty flavor combination has sparked debate worldwide, with some considering it a delightful innovation and others deeming it sacrilegious to traditional pizza norms.

Trivia

From the Community

In East Rock, Atticus Market has quietly become a neighborhood hub where artisan baking and a small grocery collide.

What began as a bookstore’s café sensibility now reads as a modern market: bakery cases stacked with laminated pastries, a coffee bar turning out balanced lattes, and curated pantry goods alongside seasonal produce.

Reviewers consistently single out the pastry program and bread quality, and the deli counter serves semolina-roll sandwiches that reviewers call “really yummy.”

The most talked-about evolution is pizza.

Using the shop’s sourdough starter, the team produces what locals describe as a “New Haven-ish” pie with noticeable fermentation and char.

One reviewer, Pyt Guyid, wrote that it’s “the best pizza I've had in New Haven so far,” while Jeremy Edmunds noted the scale of the effort—about 75 pies per night on Thursday through Saturday—and the playful risk: “If this is good, people might throw bricks through the window.”

Beyond pizza, customers praise approachable weekday lunches, solid seasonal beverages, and a sunny patio that makes pastries and coffee feel like a small daily ritual.

The market’s mix of takeout, dine-in seating, and thoughtfully sourced items keeps neighbors coming back for both quick meals and special treats.

Why Locals Love It

Dana Taylor ★★★★★

Dana raves about the bakery cases—“freshly Baked Banana Cream Pies, Banana Bread, Mixed Berry Bread” are called out—and that devotion to pastry matters because neighbors want a local spot for reliably excellent sweets. Those baked goods make it easy for community members to grab a treat for a gathering, share an indulgence after work, or start the morning with something memorable and clearly made with care.

Colin Hughes ★★★★★

Colin praises the pizza and calzones as underrated and highlights the steak and cheese sandwich, noting its quality. When a neighborhood voice says the lunch lineup is worth visiting, it signals that Atticus serves both everyday needs and surprising standouts, which helps cement its role as a spot where locals can eat well without leaving the block.

Mohamed Elsankary ★★★★★

Mohamed sums it up as the ‘full package’—good coffee, flavorful food, and pleasant seating—suggesting that consistency across coffee, sandwiches, and a sunny patio makes Atticus more than a shop. That steady combination gives residents a familiar place for work breaks, weekend catch-ups, or simple routines built around quality ingredients.
