Record-Breaking Pizza: A Slice of Epic Proportions

In 2012, Los Angeles hosted the creation of the world's largest pizza, a gluten-free marvel named 'Ottavia,' spanning over 13,500 square feet. This colossal pizza, equivalent in size to about ten basketball courts, was crafted in honor of the ancient Roman emperor Octavian Augustus. Such feats highlight pizza's ability to inspire grandeur and creativity beyond the bounds of a typical dining experience.

Why Locals Love It

Giulia Sacchet ★★★★★

Giulia summed it up as “the BEST pizza I’ve ever eaten in the USA!” That kind of praise matters to locals because it signals authenticity: a neighborhood spot that consistently delivers Italian-style pies strong enough to convert people who know the real thing. It keeps New Haven residents and visitors pointing each other toward a place that feels both genuine and reliably excellent.

Morgan Giosa ★★★★★

Morgan praised the pasta, writing “The spaghetti cacio e pepe was out of this world,” and that endorsement helps explain why locals treat Zeneli as more than a pizza stop. The kitchen’s ability to plate classic pasta with balanced seasoning and fresh garnish gives neighborhood diners a reason to come back for a full Italian meal, not just a slice.

Hayes Weggeman ★★★★★

Hayes observed that “They make their mozzarella cheese for making their pizzas,” which underscores a hands-on approach that resonates locally. Home-crafted cheese and attention to dough and bake make the food feel artisanal, and that pride in process has helped Zeneli become a go-to for residents who want high-quality, locally loved Italian flavors.

"While every restaurant on this street had a 45-70 minute wait, the wait here was only 10 minutes and I’d bet this food was twice as good as anywhere else on the block. I loved that there’s no dedicated waiter/waitress. Whoever is around, helps you and it’s a great team atmosphere/effort. The food was phenomenal. The meatballs were so good we didn’t even get a picture of them before we demolished them. The pasta, cheese, and all the garnish on my pasta was so fresh I struggle to describe it. The pasta texture was perfection. The meat and sauce were mixed in expertly while the basil garnish took the plate to the next level. Pizzas were also delicious. The portions are definitely sharable. I don’t’ want to use the word “fresh” or “perfect” too many times, but it’s the best way to describe everything we experienced here."

"Great pizza place. They make their mozzarella cheese for making their pizzas. It is a thin crust New Haven style pizza which is delicious. I had the 3 meats pizza and it was great. My wife had the Neapolitan pizza and it was delicious too. They have outdoor areas to eat if you prefer that. There is a parking area that is free."

"Amazing! That's the only way to describe this pizza. The service is fantastic too! We love stopping in New Haven for pizza any time we drive through the area. We may be from the NYS suburbs but we know New Haven's reputation for pizza is accurate! This is our first time trying Zeneli's, and my sons and I decided this is definitely our new favorite place in New Haven! Next time I want to try some of the apps in addition to the pizzas of course. We can't wait to come back!"

Culture

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the crust more Neapolitan or New Haven style?

The menu and reviews mention both Neapolitan and thin-crust styles. Many guests describe a tender, chewy Neapolitan dough alongside thin, well-baked pies that hold their toppings. Think soft chew with crisp edges rather than a thick crust.

Do they use fresh or house-made cheese on the pizzas?

Multiple reviewers note house-made mozzarella and bufala mozzarella on pies, so cheese is often fresh and made on-site or sourced as fresh bufala, which gives a creamy texture and bright milky flavor.

What does the sauce taste like?

Guests mention San Marzano-style tomato sauce: bright, slightly sweet tomato flavor with fresh basil. It’s described as balanced so it complements rather than overpowers the cheese and crust.

Which pizzas do people rave about?

Reviewers frequently mention classics like Margherita-style pies, a 3-meats pizza, and specialty options such as a calzone-style Napoletano and a Nutella dessert pizza. Prosciutto with bufala is also a noted favorite.

Are there memorable pasta dishes to try?

Yes—guests call out spaghetti cacio e pepe, rigatoni all’amatriciana and spaghetti pomodoro for authentic flavors. Portions are described as generous and the texture of the pasta is frequently praised.

How are the appetizers and small plates?

Reviewers highlight prosciutto with bufala mozzarella, bruschetta and homemade meatballs. These starters are described as fresh, well-presented and great for sharing before a pizza.

Is the calzone different from the pizzas?

The Calzone Napoletano is called out as a folded, pizza-like pie with a chewy dough and fresh fillings—think pizza ingredients enclosed for a soft, warm pocket of fillings.

Would a picky eater find something they like?

Yes. The menu includes simple pizzas, plain pastas like spaghetti pomodoro, and familiar sides, so picky eaters can usually find a mildly flavored, straightforward dish.

How does Zeneli compare to other New Haven pizzas?

Reviewers note Zeneli serves authentic Italian-style pies with shorter waits than some neighboring spots. Expect a different take from classic New Haven charred slices—more Neapolitan influence, fresh cheeses and focused sauces.

What pizzas are most popular at Zeneli Pizzeria e Cucina Napoletana?

From the menu, people often pick Nutella Pizza, Ricotta E Miele, Homemade Italian Meatballs, Cappuccino, Fresh Burrata Salad, Insalata Di Arugula. Reviews highlight consistency more than novelty, so these are safe, crowd-pleasing choices.
